A small hole and a tyre that has burst are different problems. Whether a commercial tyre can be repaired depends on its construction, the position and extent of the damage, and what an internal inspection shows. A photograph or a quick roadside glance cannot settle that question.
Why the location of the damage matters
Damage in the tread area is assessed differently from damage to a sidewall, bead or shoulder. A tyre may also have been weakened after it was driven while underinflated. The outside can look modest while the inside tells a different story. The tyre, wheel and valve need an appropriate professional assessment before a repair is agreed.
Signs to report immediately
- A burst, shredded casing or visible separation.
- A bulge, exposed cords or a deep cut in the sidewall.
- A tyre that has run flat under load, even if the original puncture looks small.
- Damage to the wheel, or more than one affected tyre on an axle.
The DVSA guide to HGV tyre defects and damage illustrates how inspectors assess irregular wear, sidewall abrasion and structural damage. It is useful context, but it is not a remote repair diagnosis for an individual tyre.
A repair decision is not a promise of a roadside repair
Even if the tyre itself appears potentially repairable, the vehicle needs a safe working position and the right equipment. Some incidents require replacement or moving the vehicle before tyre work can take place. Ask the technician what has been inspected and why a repair or replacement is recommended.
What to send before the call-out
Give the tyre size, vehicle type, affected wheel position, a short description of what happened and whether the vehicle was driven on the deflated tyre. Share photos only if safe. This helps prepare for the job, while leaving the final assessment to the person inspecting the tyre.
