The quick answer
A competent repair provider must assess the tyre, including its inside. Routine minor repairs to car and light van tyres are limited to an approved central repair area and suitable damage. Fix My Tyre provides replacement only and does not offer puncture repairs.
The damage location matters—but use the right definition
The British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association describes minor car/light-van repairs within area T, calculated from the tyre’s nominal section width. It is not the same as the central three-quarters rule used for tread depth. BTMA’s table uses 60%, 65% or 70% of nominal width depending on tyre size, with a maximum prepared penetration diameter of 6mm. See BTMA’s repair-area table and assessment criteria.
These are screening limits for the relevant minor repair process, not a promise that any injury inside the area is repairable. The shoulder, structural sidewall damage and the rest of the tyre’s condition need proper consideration.
Why the tyre has to come off the wheel
The hole you can see outside is only part of the evidence. A professional needs to inspect for internal damage, the injury’s path, liner and bead condition and the effects of low-pressure driving. Previous repairs and the tyre manufacturer’s guidance may also affect the decision.
That is why an external photograph or a telephone description cannot provide a reliable final repair verdict. Tell the repairer about driving while low or flat, sealant use and previous work—even if the tyre currently looks normal.
What can make a tyre unsuitable for routine repair
- Damage outside the approved minor-repair area or an injury beyond its permitted limits.
- Structural damage, including a bulge or affected reinforcement.
- Damage from use while flat or substantially underinflated.
- Unsuitable tread or condition, bead or liner damage, contamination or problematic previous repairs.
The actual decision belongs to the trained repairer applying the current standard and manufacturer requirements. Commercial HGV casing repairs are a separate specialist matter; do not apply this car/light-van checklist to approve an HGV repair.
Temporary kits do not settle repairability
Sealant or an externally inserted plug does not provide the internal inspection needed to establish a permanent repair. A vehicle’s emergency kit has specific instructions and limitations. Tell the professional exactly what was used. Michelin distinguishes temporary assistance from professional repair assessment.
Do not attempt a DIY repair on a motorway. Where the vehicle is dangerously positioned, assistance or recovery must address that position first, regardless of whether the tyre might ultimately be repairable.
Ask a repair provider these questions
- Will the tyre be removed for internal and external inspection?
- Will any repair follow the current relevant British Standard and tyre manufacturer guidance?
- What damage or condition makes this tyre unsuitable?
- If it cannot be repaired, what compatible replacement choices are available?
You are entitled to a clear explanation of the finding. A replacement-only provider should be honest about its service rather than presenting every puncture as inherently unrepairable.
How our replacement service fits into the decision
Fix My Tyre does not offer puncture repairs. If a compatible replacement is needed or you choose replacement after discussing your options, call with the registration, location, affected wheel and full tyre markings if safely available.
We check availability, price and suitable access before agreeing attendance. A missing locking wheel nut key also needs to be disclosed because we do not offer removal. If you want repair assessment first, arrange that with a competent repair provider.
Common questions
Can every puncture under 6mm be repaired?
No. Location, prepared injury size, condition, internal damage and other assessment criteria still apply. The number alone is not an approval.
Can a sidewall bulge be patched?
A bulge indicating structural failure is not resolved by a routine minor puncture repair. Arrange professional assessment and replacement as appropriate.
Can you come out to repair my puncture?
Our service is tyre replacement. We do not provide puncture repairs; call us to discuss a compatible replacement and the location.
